sports day

today was sports day at toyotsu high school. there is nothing like sports day in Hawaii. the students practice really hard and many classes are cancelled so they can work on their programs. there are relays, races, dancing, martial arts dipsplays, and other miscellaneous stuff like this photo above. it was pretty fun to watch! another cool thing about it is that each of the 4 grades (jr. high, high school 1-3) are split into red, white, and blue teams, then students from each grade combine to make those 3 teams. the team you are on is indicated by the color of your hachimaki (no, not hatchi matchi!) -- headband thing--on your head. it was like harry potter and the house cup! so each team gets points based on how they do well on the races, etc. at the end the white team won and was awarded a big trophy (the house cup!) please check out more photos here (and if you are curious about why that boy in the picture on the right is only wearing a bathing suit.
